Demetrius Oliver
Oliver (b. 1975) received a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA from the University of Pennsylvania. He has taught at both Princeton University and the New School in New York City. His work is anti-autobiographical and reveals little about himself. Despite the absence of biographical particularities, the work is permitted with authorial intelligence. This presence-absence dichotomy is achieved in part through Oliver’s process and choice of media which includes the comingling of drawing, photography, performance and sculpture. Oliver has participated in a number of residencies including the Studio Museum in Harlem (2006) and Light Work (2009) And has exhibited in the Print Center in Philadelphia (2014). His exhibition installations include the Highline as well as the Observatory at D’Amelio Terras in New York City. His work has been reviewed in Art in America, The Village Voice, The New Yorker, Art Lies, The Brooklyn Rail, Artforum, and The New York Times, among other publications.
