Back By Popular demand for one final tour of the season, Join AAMP and the 1838 Black Metropolis for a modified version of their one mile long 101-Black History walking tour. The nonprofit has generated another tour with themes complementing our new exhibition, Rising Sun: Artists in an Uncertain America. The title of the walking tour emerged from the Pennsylvania Abolition Societies’ 1838 Black Census, reveals a thriving metropolis of almost 19,000 free Black Philadelphians nearly 200 years ago.
The Mission
1838 Black Metropolis is a nonprofit that uses disciplined historical research to reclaim the impact and space, restore our collective knowledge, and recenter lost or forgotten Black histories, particularly emphasizing the Philadelphia Area in the 19th century. The 501c3 organization has traveled nationwide through programmatic offerings, workshops, classroom activations, and talks.
